The Cast of Scott Pilgrim vs the World: Then vs Now
By
Rachelle
/
13 Aug 2020 (Thursday)
This month marks the 10th anniversary of the critically acclaimed comic book movie,
Scott Pilgrim vs the World
! While it sadly bob-ombed at the box office during its intial run, the movie later gained cult status and is hailed as one of the best comic book adaptations put to screen to this day.
Scott Pilgrim vs the World
was directed, produced and cowritten by Edgar Wright and based on a graphic novel series written by Bryan Lee O'Malley. The film centered on the titular character (played by Michael Cera), who was tasked with defeating a league of seven evil exes in order to date Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), the girl of his dreams.
If you weren't aware, the movie also boasts quite an impressive ensemble cast who starred alongside Cera and Winstead. Here's what the cast is up to 10 years later:
1.
Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim)
Then: Michael Cera was the same age as the titular character when he was in the film. As Scott, he played bass guitar in a band with his friends called Sex Bob-omb.
Now: Cera has been featured in multiple movies since the release of
Scott Pilgrim
but his most notable role will always be George Michael Bluth from the television series
Arrested Development
. He revisited the character again when the series came back for two more seasons in 2013 and 2018. His next project is an upcoming animated film,
Blazing Samurai
, and is set for release in 2021.
2.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Ramona Flowers)
Then: Mary Elizabeth Winstead played Ramona Flowers, who moved from New York to Toronto and caught Scott's attention when he first saw her.
Now: Winstead was last seen in WarnerBros'
Birds of Prey
where she played the crossbow-wielding superhero Huntress/Helena Bertinelli.
3.
Kieran Culkin (Wallace Wells)
Then: Wallace was Scott’s roommate which by default made him the adult voice in Scott’s life.
Now: Kieran Culkin currently stars in HBO’s award-winning drama,
Succession
. He plays Roman Roy, the immature youngest son of Logan Roy who is the founder of media and entertainment conglomerate Waystar Royco. The role landed him two Golden Globe nominations.
4.
Alison Pill (Kim Pine)
Then: Allison Pill played Kim, the no-nonsense drummer of Sex Bob-omb. She also dated Scott in high school.
Now: Pill’s last film role was Mary Cheney, the daughter of Dick Cheney, in 2018's Oscar-nominated film
Vice
.
5.
Mark Webber (Stephen Stills)
Then: Mark Webber played Stephen Stills, the lead singer of the band Sex Bob-omb.
Now: Webber is also a director and writer with films such as
Flesh and Blood, The Ever After
and
The End of Love
under his belt. He also had a recurring role in the 2017 series
SMILF
.
6.
Johnny Simmons (Neil Nordegraf)
Then: Johnny Simmons portrayed Neil, one of Scott’s friends. He is often referred to as Young Neil. He later replaced Scott as bass player of Sex Bob-omb when Scott left the band.
Now: Simmons’ most recent role was the Netflix series
Girlboss
that was cancelled back in 2017.
7.
Ellen Wong (Knives Chau)
Then: Ellen Wong played 17-year old Knives Chau when she was in her 20s. Knives was the girl that Scott dated before he met Ramona.
Now: Wong currently portrays Jenny Chey on Netflix’s
GLOW
. The series has a fourth and final season on the way.
8.
Satya Bhabha (Matthew Patel)
Then: Satya Bhabha starred as Matthew Patel, the first of Ramona’s evil exes. He also has mystical powers.
Now: Since
Scott Pilgrim
, Bhabha has landed roles in multiple television series such as
The Good Wife, New Girl, Eastsiders
and
Sense8.
9.
Anna Kendrick (Stacey Pilgrim)
Then: Relatively unknown Anna Kendrick played Stacey Pilgrim, the nosey younger sister of Scott. She could easily be confused as the older sibling because she’s constantly giving her brother advice. She worked at a coffee shop, Second Cup.
Now: Kendrick went on to star in the successful
Pitch Perfect
franchise that had movies released between 2012 and 2017. She has since had a successful film career with her most recent work being
Trolls World Tour
.
10.
Aubrey Plaza (Julie Powers)
Then: Aubrey Plaza bleeped her way through the film as the rude, potty-mouthed Julie Powers. She also worked at Second Cup with Scott’s sister Stacey.
Now: Plaza has starred in multiple films since (
The To Do List, Life After Best, Dirty Grandpa
and
Ingrid Goes West
) with
Child’s Play
being her most recent work. She is however most notably known as April Ludgate in the series
Parks and Recreation
that ran from 2009-2015.
11.
Chris Evans (Lucas Lee)
Then: Chris Evans almost stole the show with his limited-time portrayal of arrogant douchebag actor Lucas Lee, one of Ramona’s evil exes.
Now: Evans has since blown up and become one of the world’s most famous actors thanks to his role as Captain America in the MCU. His most recent work was playing Andy Barber in AppleTV’s drama series,
Defending Jacob
.
12.
Brandon Routh (Todd Ingram)
Then: Pretty boy Brandon Routh played Ramona’s third evil ex, Todd Ingram, who developed superpowers for being vegan.
Now: Routh is most recently seen as the DC superhero Ray Palmer/The Atom in the
DC's L
egends of Tomorrow
tv series. He first made his debut as the character in the
Arrow
tv series and has gone on to appear in fellow DC tv series like
The Flash, Supergirl
and
Batwoman
.
13.
Brie Larson (Envy Adams)
Then: A young Brie Larson portrayed Envy Adams, the lead singer of The Clash at Demonhead and Scott’s ex-girlfriend. Her real name was Natalie.
Now: Since the movie’s release, Larson has earned herself an Oscar (for her portrayal in 2015’s
Room
) and starred in a standalone MCU film that made over $1billion at the box office (2019’s
Captain Marvel
). She will reprise her role as the superhero for an upcoming sequel set for release in 2022.
14.
Jason Schwartzman (Gideon Graves)
Then: Jason Schwartzman is the man behind the character Gideon Graves, Ramona’s most recent ex. Gideon is a record producer and also the person responsible for forming the league of evil exes.
Now: Schwartzman is set to star in frequent collaborator Wes Anderson’s 10th masterpiece,
The French Dispatch
. The release date for this film is currently undetermined.
15.
Edgar Wright (director)
Then: English director, screenwriter and producer Edgar Wright had only directed films in the UK before branching out with
Scott Pilgrim vs the World
. It was his first US-centric work that he did without frequent collaborator, Simon Pegg. His work flair and style is visible in the film, perhaps its even what made it such a cult classic to begin with.
Now: Wright has since completed his Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy (which began before
Scott Pilgrim
) and continued to write and direct. His last passion project,
Baby Driver
, was a successful hit that earned him more recognition than ever before. He currently has an upcoming psychological film in the works.
BONUS
The cast also had a reunion over Zoom to do a table read of the cult classic film. Director Edgar Wright, writer Michael Bacall and Bryan Lee O'Malley, the mastermind behind
Scott Pilgrim
were also in attendance. Watch the whole thing below:
