A live-action remake of The Powerpuff Girls is in the works at The CW!

By Rachelle  /  25 Aug 2020 (Tuesday)

Academy Award-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody is teaming up with the godfather of CW Greg Berlanti to develop a live-action remake of the popular Cartoon Network series, The Powerpuff Girls

The CW remake of the the iconic, pint-sized trio of Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup will follow in the veins of Riverdale, where the titular superheroes are now disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?

The original Powerpuff Girls was created by Craig McCracken. In that series, Professor Utonium accidentally created the elementary school aged super team of Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup by combining sugar, spice, and everything nice with the mysterious Chemical X. The show ran for six seasons and 78 episodes between 1998 and 2005. The Powerpuff Girls Movie was released in 2002, while a rebooted animated series began airing on Cartoon Network in 2016.

Berlanti has producer credit under his belt for tv series like Dawson's Creek and Netflix's You but he is most famously known for helping to build the Arrowverse at The CW which began with the Arrow tv series that later birthed other series such as The Flash, Supergirl, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, Batwoman and Titans.

Cody is best known for writing the critically-acclaimed comedy feature Juno, for which she won the Academy Award for best original screenplay in 2008. Her other films include Jennifer’s Body and Young Adult starring Charlize Theron.

No cast has been announced as of now so we thought we'd go ahead and do some fan-casting of our own while we wait!

Joey King as Blossom

Joey King started acting at an early age and first gained recognition for portraying Ramona Quimby in the comedy film Ramona and Beezus (2010). Her latest work is Netflix's The Kissing Booth 2, a teen romantic comedy sequel with a third installment in the works. At 21, King is the perfect age to be portraying the self-proclaimed leader of the Powerpuff Girls in CW's vision of the remake!

Sabrina Carpenter as Bubbles

Singer and actress Sabrina Carpenter has seen success with her career at only 21, having released 4 albums as well as appearing in films like Netflix's Tall Girl and most recently in a lead role in Work It starring Jordan Fisher and Liza Koshy. Carpenter's bubbly outlook could be just what the CW needs for Bubbles.

Alexa Demie as Buttercup

Alexa Demie is somewhat of an indie darling, having appeared in films such as Brigsby Bear, Mid90s and Waves. and can be most recently found in the HBO series, Euphoria. She may look too demure to play the tomboy but hey, it's the CW. Wouldn't it be interesting to see her bring Buttercup to life?

Who would you like to see play these iconic characters? Let us know in the comments below.
