2013 had been a great year for the film industry, with box office records broken, Golden Horse Awards nominations (and won), exciting movies announced and movie castings that became the talk of the town.



Then there were shocking news about the loss of a few beloved and respectable members of the film and TV industry too. We look back on 2013 on some of the biggest movie/TV headlines of the year.


The Passing of TV Veteran Actor Huang Wenyong



MediaCorp actor Huang Wenyong died on April 20 due to lymphoma - a type of blood cancer. The news came as a shock to the public and within hours when the news broke, social media sites like Facebook and Twitter were filled with condolence messages.

The beloved actor will always be remembered.


Iron Man 3 Smashed Box Office Records - Highest-Grossing Movie of 2013



Oh yeah, the superhero Tony Stark, aka Iron Man took the no.1 spot as the highest-grossing movie worldwide in 2013! This sequel is also the highest -grossing film of the Iron Man series and the 2nd highest-grossing film of the Marvel series (behing Marvel’s The Avengers)!

So how much did the 3rd installment of the Iron Man franchise make? It achieved the 6th largest worldwide opening with $372.5 million and at the end of its run, it achieved a whopping $1.2 billion globally! 


Ilo Ilo - Our Proudest Local Film to Date

We first heard of Anthony Chen’s first full-length feature film Ilo Ilo in May when he bagged the coveted Camera d’Or award at the Cannes Film Festival. It was the first time a Singapore feature film has won at Cannes, and not to mention the 15-minute standing ovation when the film premiered at the Director’s Fortnight.



Thereafter, it was a landslide of positive news of Ilo Ilo winning awards in film festivals around the world, including the prestigious Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan, known to be the Asian equivalent of the Oscars. Bagging four Golden Horses, namely Best Supporting Actress (Yeo Yann Yann), Best Original Screenplay, Best New Director and the biggest award of the night, Best Picture.

Ilo Ilo historic win puts Singapore’s film industry on the global map, marking a new chapter for the future of our cinema.


Film Critic Roger Ebert Passes Away


The movie community lost an important figure when renowned film critic Roger Ebert died in April. He was known to give a 'thumbs up/thumbs down' review and was the first film critic to win a Pulitzer Prize in 1975.

Mr Ben Affleck as The New Batman

We know you love your superheroes, and when it comes to finding the right actor to for these roles, it’s never an easy task. The 41-year-old actor was named as the next Batman in Zack Snyder's untitled film where he will be bringing Batman and Superman together on screen for the first time.



After the announcement, some netizens and fanboys were unhappy with the selection and took their unhappiness to social media sites, creating a frenzy with their hateful and hurtful comments. When the news of Gal Gadot playing the role of Wonder Woman, she wasn’t spared either...


50 Shades Of Grey Casting



Oh yeah, fans couldn’t wait to find out who would be casted in the adaption of EL James erotic bestseller Fifty Shades of Grey but when the lead actors Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson were cast as Christian and Anastasia, again, it sparked an uproar online.

Many didn’t think Hunnam was a right fit for the hunky lead and about a month later, an official statement announced that Jamie Dornan will take over the role of Christian. Hunnam dropped out because of ‘busy schedules’ and ‘family stuff’, or so they say...


Straits Times/Razor TV Fast & Furious 6 Interview



The six-minute video showing the stars of action movie Fast & Furious 6 overwhelmed by the car prices in Singapore became a talk of the town. The clip featured actors Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Gina Carano and Luke Evans guessing the the cost of specific car models in Singapore, and their reactions were priceless when Straits Times Life! journalist John Lui revealed the answers.

Demise Of Fast & Furious Actor Paul Walker



And while we’re on the topic of Fast and Furious, who would have forgotten about the shocking news of the passing of Paul Walker, who played Brian O’Conner in The Fast and Furious film series. His freak car accident was a tragedy many couldn’t accept.

Buddy and co-actor Vin Diesel confirms the release of ‘Fast & Furious 7’ to be postponed till 2015 where it will feature the late actor.
