The 4th Rendezvous With French Cinema features a line-up of 16 movies, unreleased in Singapore and selected among the best of contemporary French cinema. The festival will be launched with the biggest French comedy of the year “Serial (Bad) weddings” that attracted more than 12 million viewers in France in 2014! The director, Philippe de Chauveron and part of the cast of this film will attend the Red Carpet for the opening night.
This comedy tells with humor how being of different origins and religions can not only divide, but also bring families closer together. Actor Medi Sadoun and actress Emilie Caen will be accompanying director Philippe de Chauveron on the red carpet.
This immersion into French Cinema is complete with a photo exhibition, 'Inside Cannes', which will bring the magic of the Cannes festival’s red carpet to Singapore. Inside Cannes,
a timeless black-and-white travel into the mesmerizing atmosphere of
the Cannes Film Festival. Cannes and its Croisette, the red carpet and
its glitter, its beach and celebrities – all elements that have fuelled
the dreams of movie lovers since the 1950’s are reunited.
Known internationally for her roles in the movie The English Patient (1996) and Chocolat (2000), Juliette Binoche’s star power shines through once again with the festival’s special tribute to Juliette Binoche – a Juliette Binoche Retrospective, featuring a few of her movies.
There will be a screening of Summer Hours and Juliette Binoche: Sketches for a portrait, a documentary directed by her sister Marion Stalens. Binoche will be present after the screening of Juliette Binoche: Sketches for a portrait to answer questions
from the public.
In conjunction with SGIFF, there will also be a Singapore premiere of her most recent movie, Clouds of Sils Maria which was officially selected to compete for the Palmes d’Or at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.
Ahead of the Oscars, 4th Rendezvous With French Cinema will also feature France’s official selection for the Foreign Language Film category at next year's Academy Awards – Saint Laurent, directed by Bertrand Bonello.
The film has received conflicted reviews, sparking up controversy for its depiction of the life and torments of designer Yves Saint Laurent (Gaspard Ulliel), his longtime business and life partner Pierre Bergé (Jeremie Renier), and his lover Jacques de Bascher (Louis Garrel). The film also competed for the Palme d’Or at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.
