Super hero movies are arriving en masse this year with four in theaters so far and one more on the way. The latest, The Green Lantern, hit screens this weekend but in brightest day and blackest night, major profits escaped his sight.
For many movies a $52 million first place debut would scream success, but it's a rough start in the face of the $200+ million budget Warner Brothers threw into kicking off the Green Lantern franchise. Normally international markets would take up the slack, but despite opening this weekend in more than half of its planned markets the movie has only seen an additional $17 million in foreign sales. Here's hoping those Ryan Reynolds action figures and lunch boxes help make up the difference on the movie's bottom line.
In a distant second place is last week's top flick Super 8 with $21 million. Dropping just 40% from last weekend the $50 million movie has already earned back over $80 million world wide. Jim Carrey's latest offering, Mr. Popper's Penguins, opened in third place with $18 million. And X-Men:First Class slipped to fourth place this weekend, but not before crossing the $100 million mark.
