Weekend Box Office - Pixar's First Flop Still Rocks The Box Office

If you have small children in your inner circle you've probably heard little other than squeals of anticipation over this weekend's arrival of Cars 2. Nevermind the dismissiveness that has been circling around what may be Pixar's first non-critical success, at the box office this latest release is still a hit.

While the $68 million that Cars 2 banked for an easy number one spot can't touch the $109 million debut of the most recent Pixar release Toy Story 3, it's still in the ball park of Pixar's other top earners. After so many hits and a brilliant marketing plan, the studio is all but immune from financial failure on a project. Here's hoping that doesn't mean they go the way of their partner Disney and become a low-quality sequel pimp in the interest of making some cash.

Bad Teacher took a distant second place with $31 million, a fair turn out for a summertime rated-R comedy. It marks a high note for director Jake Kasdan whose previous films Orange County and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story were not exactly box office hits.
