Charlize Theron and Tom Hanks sticking up for ‘Parasite’
Parasite took home 4 awards last evening, including the historic ‘Best Picture’ award, becoming the first non-English language film to do so. The ‘Bong hive’ also went home with the Best Director (Bong Joon Ho), Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Screenplay.
During the Best Picture acceptance speech, the Korean producers were making their speech when the lights on the centerstage went dark, with its camera then panning to presenter Jane Fonda who would close the award show. Their interrupted thank-yous were saved by front row A-list attendees like Charlize Theron and Tom Hanks who led a chant ‘Up! Up! Up!’, signaling for the stage lights to be up, and to allow the team to properly finish their acceptance speech.
Parasite is still showing InCinemas. View showtimes here.
Brad Pitt wins his first acting Oscar
The first award of the night went to Brad Pitt for a Best Supporting Actor nod for this role as stuntman Cliff Booth in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon A Time in Hollywood’. This is Pitt’s first acting-related Academy Award (surprise, surprise). Yes, this veteran has never won an acting Oscar despite numerous nominations and some of the biggest and memorable roles he had done in Fight Club or Se7en.
Yes, he took home a Best Picture Oscar for 12 Years a Slave in 2014, but as the capacity of a producer instead. His bud and co-star, Leonardo DiCaprio also only clinched his first golden statue in 2016 for his role in The Revenant.
Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig’s Live Audition
Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig are comedy duos who make us laugh pretty much every time they appear on screen. They know it, but they didn’t want you to typecast them, so the SNL vets went into a duologue to showcase their ranges… from being ‘mad’ to ‘crying’, they displayed it all. “We just know there are a lot of directors here tonight,” Wiig exclaimed.
They may not be receiving their Best Actress award this year, but where do we sign up to vote for these ladies to host the Oscars next year?
Bong Joon Ho giggling at his Oscar
Come’on, it’s a freaking Oscar! Who wouldn’t geek out at the sight of holding an Oscar award to call your own. Bong Joon Ho gave the cutest moment as he stared at his award and let out a smile while his co-writer was making an acceptance speech when they won ‘Best Original Screenplay’.
Frozen squad
Tony award winner Idina Menzel, who sings and voices Elsa in Frozen (and Frozen 2) took to the Oscar stage to belt out an Elsa anthem, singing the Academy Award-nominated "Into the Unknown" from Frozen 2. She was joined by Norwegian singer-songerwriter Aurora, who is heard on the original track, as well as nine women who have voiced Elsa in international releases of the Disney sequel. The performers included voices from Norway, Japan, Denmark, Poland, Russia, Spain, Germany and Thailand.
