Discover Hidden Gems In Netflix With These Nifty Tricks
By Chen Shun / 25 Apr 2020 (Saturday)
There are times when you finish your drama and you wish to find something similar to curb your cravings. For example, when I first finished ‘When the Camellia Blooms’ I was in need of more romantic-comedy series from South-Korea and since I didn’t have anything in mind I had to scroll through tons of dramas on Netflix to find something similar. When I found it, which was ‘Strong Girl Bong-Soon’, I was quite stunned as it took me a whopping 45 minutes to settle on something new when I could be finishing the first episode instead.
It was after I explored Netflix via the app and on the computer that I realise there were many nifty tricks that could help everyone find a new series in a snap of a finger.
1. Check Out What To Watch Using Netflix’s Top 10 List
Instead of calling this a trick, this ‘hack’ is more of a recommendation for someone who doesn’t know what he/she wants to watch. This ‘Top 10’ list is updated daily so you don’t have to fret that there is nothing for you the next day.
So when you friend tells you ‘I don’t know what to watch…’ the next time, just tell them to pick a number from 1 to 10 and watch whatever is in that rank that day.
2. Search Using A Key Word
Huge selection popped up when I searched with a general theme 'feel good'.
Netflix’s search bar might be one of the most unused but useful functions on the platform, PERIOD. Did you know that other than searching via the conventional way of searching for specific show or film titles and genres, you can also search for shows that may have been tagged under specific categories? For example, ‘talking animals’, ‘feel-good’, ’slow burn’ and ‘dark magic’ to name a few.
So the next time you want to watch something rare or quirky, just plant the keyword into the search bar and you might find some undiscovered hidden gems!
3. Check Out ‘More Like This’
The next time you finish a series/movie on Netflix and you enjoyed it, don’t be in a hurry to go back to the home page. Under the show that you liked, it should have a ‘More Like This’ tab. It reveals a list of other shows that Netflix thinks are similar if you go under that tab.
So, if you enjoyed that one show or film, this is a great way to find more that might interest you.
4. More ‘Details’ Than You Expect
Other than ‘More Like This’ tab, you should also lookout for the ‘Details’ tab. This tab is useful when you want to find a specific genre or another series your favourite actor acted in. All the links in the tab are clickable! Be it the show’s creators, cast, genres, and even interesting tags.
5. Be Updated By Using The ‘Coming Soon’ Function
On mobile devices, there is a tab called “Coming Soon” and … well, the tab does what it says… it shows you everything that is coming soon. There will even be a trailer and a helpful synopsis to go along with every single show. If you are interested in the upcoming show after watching the trailer and reading the synopsis, click on the “Remind Me” bell icon so that you can get a notification when the show premieres on Netflix!
