Having established themselves as masters of Asian horror cinema with the The Eye series, the Pang Brothers – Oxide Pang and Danny Pang – reunite to co-direct a film for the first time in 12 years, returning to the big screen with the new supernatural crime thriller THE MAGE. Produced by Conroy Chan, the film stars Josie Ho, Iman, Carlos Chan and German Cheung in leading roles. It blends traditional Hong Kong occult traditions and the supernatural with modern criminal investigation, creating a classic Hong Kong film packed with mystery, action and emotions.
The Pang Brothers have earned international acclaim for their distinctive visual aesthetic and psychological horror style. Their notable works include Bangkok Dangerous, The Eye, The Eye 2, The Eye 10, Re-Cycle, The Messengers, The Child's Eye 3D and The Storm Warriors. Among these, The Eye series has become a representative masterpiece in Chinese-language horror films. For their latest collaboration, the brothers return to their familiar supernatural genre while incorporating a string of murders, the Five Elements sorcery and criminal investigation, injecting a new-generation vibe into classic Hong Kong supernatural films.
THE MAGE follows Lan Pui-ching (Josie Ho), an eccentric woman who spends her days carrying a large cloth bag and collecting what she calls “trash.” She repeatedly appears at crime scenes where police have ruled as suicides or accidents. Officer Wong Ming (Carlos Chan) initially believes that she is mentally unstable, until he discovers that she was born with the ability to communicate with the dead. The soil, scraps of paper and blades of grass that she collects are all attached to fragments of the souls of people who died unnaturally. As the two investigate the victims' names, birth dates and the locations of their deaths, they gradually uncover a sinister conspiracy in which someone is using a series of murders, based on the Five Elements – Metal, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth, to extend the life of a mysterious cult leader. With the true mastermind lurking in the shadows, Lan Pui-ching must overcome the inner demons that have haunted her for 13 years and stop the next murder in a world where science and supernatural collide.
Today, on the 14th day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar, THE MAGE launched its official social media pages and released its first teaser poster and trailer. Follow us for more updates leading to the film’s release. THE MAGE will be coming soon to Singapore theatres!
