Lawson loved the good weather and food in Singapore!
By InCinemas / 08 Apr 2013 (Monday)
Lawson was in our Sunny Island last week as part of their promotional tour for their latest album ‘Chapman Square’.
Besides the successful showcase they had on Friday, the boys met their fans the the autograph session held at Bugis Junction.
Prior to that, they even visited attractions like the Universal Studios Singapore and the Jurong Bird Park!
Lawson, made up of four members, Andy Brown (Lead Vocals), Adam Pitts (Drums), Joel Peat (Lead Guitar) and Ryan Fletcher (Bass Guitar) are a UK band who have big aspirations for the future.
InCinemas sat down with two of the members, Ryan and Joel last Saturday afternoon at the Gallery Hotel and were very candid and quirky with their answers from the media.
Staying in Singapore was definitely a good time for them as Fletcher pointed out about the good weather the amazing food. He even went on about how the barbeque stingray they had earlier was delicious. We asked about trying the king of the fruits, both looked eager to try after learning what durian actually is.
Lawson received many weird signboards from their fans, both of them agreed that some of the ‘shoutouts’ to them were rather filthy. ‘Yeah, we had one like ‘Adam bang me like your drums!’, which was quite dirty and there are ones I don’t even want to repeat!”, said Fletcher, the 23-year-old musician.
Peat added that the fans in Asia were very knowledgable in technology where many had iPads with LED words running across it, which he was intrigued by it.
On the topic of fans, Fletcher said he received chocolate boobs from the Singapore fans and Joel echoed with his ‘grow your own boobs’ gift. “Mainly boobs, which is great!”, Fletcher joked. Besides naming a ‘mankini’ as one of their weirdest gifts from fans, Peat mentioned that he had nightmares about the photoshopped photo-book called ’50 Shades of Lawson’ which they received a while ago.
Lead vocalist, Brown was voted as, the big brother of the group and yet, the one that needs to be taken care of. Besides being the lead vocalist in the band, Brown’s hidden talent has got something to do with his mouth; to catch any fruit in any quantity at any distance. Breaking out in laughter, Fletcher added that Brown can catch 50 blueberries without swallowing!
Pitts on the other hand was very knowledgeable and artistic where he not only designed the lightings and stage setting for Lawson’s stage show of their last tour in UK, he even flew a plane when he was younger.
Calling Singapore as one of the best crowd during their showcase at St James Powerhouse last Friday, the duo were grateful and happy that the fans enjoyed it. ‘The crowd was so loud and fans were singing to the songs, which was pretty amazing!’, said Fletcher. The group belted out their hit songs like ‘When She Was Mine’, and fan favourites like ‘Standing In The Dark’ and ‘Taking Over Me’.
Citing John Mayer and Taylor Swift as their inspirations and music influences for their album, they also loved rock bands like the Maroon 5 and The Script. Peat also brought up country musicians like Keith Urban and Rascal Flatts as one of his music that he often listens to.
While known as ‘the boy band that toured with The Wanted’, Fletcher hopes that fans will see them as Lawson, and not as a ‘boy band’, even though they know that they, as a rock band is in the pop industry. ‘We write music which is really personal to us. We think the term ‘boy band’ is quite a lazy term if you just look at our poster and have not listened to our music before, but when people see the live show and hear our music, people will see it as us’, he continued.
Indeed, Lawson not only showed their talented musicality during their showcase, they charmed fans with their good looks and young, upbeat energy. You will definitely be seeing more of the boys in the future with good music and hopefully, a collaboration with one of their inspirations which Peat calls Swift as ‘hot’!
