Official Release from Cathay Organisation
Singapore, 12 April 2013 – Registration opens today as Cathay Motion Picture Awards returns for the second year. The Awards has become an annual signature event for the Cathay Organisation, building on the inaugural success in 2012.
Cathay Motion Picture Awards is a short film competition created to fulfill Cathay Organisation’s commitment towards the development of Singapore’s film industry. Utilising its assets in cinema exhibition as the platform for aspiring filmmakers to showcase their talent, Cathay pioneers the path as the first and only movie exhibitor in Singapore to organise a short film competition.
“Cathay Organisation believes that in filmmaking, small steps lead to quantum leaps. As a cinema exhibitor, we are able to provide the small steps, which is the exposure opportunity on our screens for the shorts. And this could possibly lead to these aspiring filmmakers to be talent-spotted or gain recognition within the industry, which is the quantum leap in pursuing their passion,” said Mr. Suhaimi Rafdi, CEO of Cathay Organisation.
Cathay Motion Picture Awards 2013 is open to participants from all walks of life, to form teams of up to three to take part. Registration is done via the official website – www.cmpa.com.sg and closes on 12 May 2013. In conjunction with Cathay Organisation’s 78th Anniversary this year, the main criterion of the competition is to submit a motion picture of 78 seconds, and it has to meet a production deadline of 78 hours – from 18 May 2013, Saturday, 12pm to 21 May 2013, Tuesday, 6pm. Participants will also have to adhere to a theme that will only be revealed on 18 May 2013 during a compulsory briefing.
All submitted entries will be shortlisted to the top 15 finalists, by a committee consisting of six industry professionals such as Zaihirat Banu, CEO of Oak3Films, Anthony Chen, Director at Zhao Wei Films, and Isnor Dzulkarnain Jafaar, Founder of Singapore Malay Film Society.
The top 15 finalists’ motion pictures will then be presented for evaluation by a panel of esteemed judges, namely –
- Jack Neo, Founder/CEO/Director of J Team Productions
- Philip Cheah, Film Critic
- Lee Thean-jeen, Writer-Director
- Stuart McAra, Executive Producer for Industrial, Light & Magic
- Boon Chan, The Straits Times Life! Media Correspondent
- Nicholas Yong, Managing Director of United International Pictures, Singapore & Malaysia
The top three winners will be determined solely by the judges on three criteria – originality, production quality and entertainment value. There will also be a Viewer’s Choice award which is based on the motion picture with the highest number of public votes garnered via the official website between 3 and 23 June.
Realising dreams and the biggest cash prize in a local film competition
The ultimate dream of an aspiring filmmaker is to see his/her own motion picture on the silver screen, and this will be realised for the winning entries, as the short films will be screened on Cathay Cineplexes’ circuit for a period of four weeks in 2014.
The Best Motion Picture will take home $15,000 in cash – the largest cash prize for a filmmaking competition in Singapore, while the first and second runners-up will win $8,000 and $5,000 cash respectively. All winning entries, including the Viewers’ Choice award, will receive the exclusive Cathay VIP card worth more than $4,000, for each member of the team to watch free movies at Cathay Cineplexes for a year.
The four winners – Best Motion Picture, First Runner-Up, Second Runner-Up and a Viewers’ Choice award, will be announced at the awards ceremony on 18 July 2013, which is also Cathay’s anniversary date.
