More Villains, More Action, More ‘Fun’ Say the Cast of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in Singapore!

By InCinemas  /  28 Mar 2014 (Friday)

Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, together with director Marc Webb and producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach from the highly anticipated The Amazing Spider-Man 2 were in Singapore from Thursday to celebrate Earth Hour!

Fans are definitely waiting in anticipation of what’s to come for the next installment of Marvel’s superhero, Spider-man played by Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. With the introduction of three more villains in the sequel, there’s definitely bound to be more action, more drama and story arcs that moviegoers can look forward to.

Director Marc Webb who will also be directing the following Spiderman movie, revealed that it was much more 'fun and easier', going back on set for the 2nd time as he ‘knew the actors well’.

During our interview with the cast, Stone echoed his sentiments saying, “It was great coming back for the second (film). A lot has happened to Gwen in her life and personally, it felt great because I felt like I knew everybody better. We’re like a family, so coming back again, telling the story with people who I love and trust, it was fun.”

On her character Gwen Stacy, Stone talked about the challenges of playing the ‘girl behind the superhero’. “One of the challenges is that she has a lot of plans of her own life, just as he has of his own and both are equally important to be explored, that isn’t necessary that they have to be together to do that.”

“Her father’s death (which we’ve seen in the first movie) totally changed her perspective on life - that time is of the essence. She has a lot of resilience that comes out of her”, Stone continued.

In The Amazing Spider-man 2, we’ll be seeing three villains who will take on the quirky superhero. Jamie Foxx who plays one of the three villains, Electro said that gets into character rather quickly when he has the makeup and jacket on. On playing a villain role, Foxx said that it was ‘fun’ and it ‘felt good’.

“Me being as bad as I can, makes him as good as he (Spider-man) is”, the actor added.

He even shared the story when he got the call to be a part of the movie during his daughter’s birthday celebration, who is a big fan of Spider-man. “When I told her I was going to play the villain, she said ‘Oh, Spider-Man is going to kick your butt huh!’”, he recounted.

For a veteran actor like Foxx who played many roles, including a president in White House Down, there is still a character that his hopes to play someday. During our interview with him, Foxx slowly got into character, reciting lines of a scene he had seen from a documentary of retired boxer Mike Tyson. “That quiet performance of him being in the documentary will really be something spectacular to put something up.”

Being the superhero that many children look up to is not an easy task. When asked about his thoughts of playing such an iconic character, Garfield pointed out that he likes the idea of Spider-man being a ‘passivist’.

“He never throws a punch, never throws a kick, but using his enemies’ weaknesses against themselves; a very Charlie Chaplin-like, or ever Bugs Bunny-like way. I like the idea of the skinny little kid, dodging, ducking and diving these big bad guys - a powerful message of the theme of Spider-man.”

“Peter Parker struggles, he’s imperfect and his life is a mess. He is bumbling and stumbling through his life and I think that is empowering for young people to see, knowing that you can do all these incredibly heroic things in your life and also have your own issues and problems,” Garfield explained.

Speaking like a true superhero, Garfield also talked about the handphone-'selfie' generation where young people are so indulged in how they had to look perfect.

“That’s a dangerous thing because it’s not fully self-loving. It’s important for us to encourage young people and ourselves to honour our little uniqueness, our little cracks, our dents that makes us unique and I think the idea of Spider-man (being flawed) is powerful.”

Join the cast and crew of Spider-Man at 8.30pm at The Float@ Marina Bay tomorrow to celebrate Earth Hour!
