Will 'Avengers: Endgame' beat 'Avatar' to become the biggest box office hit of all time?

By Say Peng  /  29 Apr 2019 (Monday)

'Avengers: Endgame' has already broken opening weekend box office records when it made US$350 million in the USA and US$859 million overseas, totaling about US$1.2 billion, beating Infinity War's opening weekend record by nearly $600 million.

But will 'Avengers: Endgame' become the highest grossing film in history?

Let's take a look at the top 10 highest grossing films in history and find out if 'Avengers: Endgame' stand a chance to come out tops.

1. Avatar - US$2,787,965,087
2. Titanic - $2,187,463,944
3. Star Wars: The Force Awakens - $2,068,223,624
4. Avengers: Infinity War - $2,048,359,754
5. Jurassic World - $1,671,713,208
6. The Avengers - $1,518,812,988
7. Furious 7 - $1,516,045,911
8. Avengers: Age of Ultron - $1,405,403,694
9. Black Panther - $1,346,913,161
10. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 - $1,341,693,157

The first 2 Avengers movies are already part of the top 10 grossing movies, not to also mention 'Black Panther', the first African-American-led movie to hit the top 10 list.

It's a sure fact that 'Endgame' will join the top 5 ranks, definitely beating 'Infinity War', 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens', and 'Titanic'.

As of now, 'Endgame' is currently the 18th highest grossing film of all time, and the movie has only opened for about a week.

The billion-dollar question is, will 'Endgame' surpass James Cameron's 'Avatar'?

Between 'Titanic' and 'Avatar', there is a sizeable box office difference of US$500 million. For 99% of movies, this is almost insurmountable. Not even the great franchises such as Star Wars and the Jurassic movies have come close.

But we're talking about 'Endgame', which has unarguably the biggest and most rabid fanbase in the world.

My bet is that if there is a movie that is able to beat Avatar's ginormous box office, it is either another one of Cameron's own movies or 'Avengers: Endgame'.

Finally, check out this cool video of the highest grossing MCU films:
