Malaysian Film Festival showcases the diversity of Malaysian cinema

The Malaysian Film Festival is an annual event which celebrates the very best of Malaysian cinema.
Just like Singapore, Malaysia has a rich and diverse culture, and this is amply reflected in this year's Malaysian Film Festival's line-up.
The festival will screen 6 films of varying genres and languages.
Opening the festival is the military action film PASKAL.
Based on the actual experiences of the Royal Malaysian Navy's Special Forces Team, the film follows Lieutenant Commander Arman Rahmat (played by Hairul Azreen) and his team as they embark on a mission to rescue a tanker that was taken over by Somalian pirates.
Not enough action? There is also the crime action drama Crossroads: One, Two, Jaga, directed by Nam Ron.
The film tells the story of an abused domestic worker Sumiati who tries to escape to Indonesia, while an idealistic policeman Hassan tries to take on institutional corruption.
Those who prefer their films to be lighter can check out romantic comedy Shun Pong O.
The film follows K-pop fangirl Shinny who meets and falls in love with a South Korean boy, Park Ji Hoon. But one day, Park Ji Hoon suddenly leaves without any words and Shinny decides to go to Korea to find him.
There will also be a panel discussion about genre filmmaking in Singapore and Malaysia. The panel comprises both Singaporean and Malaysian filmmakers such as Yeo Siew Hua, the director of Golden Leopard-winner A Land Imagined; Jacen Tan, director of Singapore's first zombie movie, Zombiepura; and Nam Ron, director of aforementioned Crossroads: One, Two, Jaga.
The Malaysian Film Festival will run from 30 Aug to 1 September. More info can be found at their website:
