Singapore Mental Health Film Festival 2020 features film screenings, panel discussions and wellness workshops

By Flora  /  14 Jan 2020 (Tuesday)

The Singapore Mental Health Film Festival is back for its 2nd edition this February, boasting seven feature films, along with short films, panel discussions and mindfulness workshops for all. The festival aims to engage members of the public in meaningful, raw, and authentic conversations about mental health.

From February 27 - March 1, the Singapore Mental Health Film Festival (SMHFF) aims to challenge the social stigma surrounding mental illness and decrease the discrimination faced by those affected by it.

The opening film of the Festival, Freedom Writers is a true story starring Hilary Swank as a teacher who inspires her class of “at-risk” students to learn tolerance, apply themselves and pursue education beyond high school. . . Screened together with the winning short film from the SMHFF Youth Competition, it will be followed by a panel discussion "How does the stigma of mental health perpetuate in society?". This panel invites you to critically reflect on your own perception of mental illness, and to appreciate the psychological and sociological forces behind them. Swipe through for more information on our panelists. . . This year, SMHFF has also tied up with @ethosbooks to pair our screenings and panels with books that will aid you in continuing your journey to understand the different types of mental health issues. For this topic, we have chosen Teo You Yenn's critically acclaimed "This Is What Inequality Looks Like". . This is a book about how seeing poverty entails confronting inequality. It is about how acknowledging poverty and inequality leads to uncomfortable revelations about our society and ourselves. And it is about how once we see, we cannot, must not, unsee. . To book your tickets and purchase the book, head to www.smhff.com today.

Feature films include ‘Beautiful Boy’ where Timothee Chalamet was nominated for the Golden Globes and BAFTA Film Awards in the Best Supporting Actor category; ‘Happiness’, where veteran actress Kara Wai won the Best Actress title at the Hong Kong Film Awards; as well as 2007’s acclaimed film, ‘Freedom Writers’ starring Hilary Swank, Scott Glenn and Imelda Staunton.

Panel conversations are conducted with industry experts, persons-in-recovery, and caregivers, where mental health issues will be explored such as stigma around mental health, eating disorder, dementia, etc. If you would like to explore more hands-on approach, mindfulness workshops such as clay-making to Yin Yoga, as well as movement workshops and even learn to make your own wellness toolkit.
