We Picked Our Top 5 Bond Films

By Lucas Chia  /  01 Oct 2021 (Friday)

With the long-awaited release No Time To Die in cinemas, it’s only timely I listed down my favourite entries from the iconic Bond franchise! I've skimmed through all of 007's movies from Dr No to Spectre and picked my Top 5.

Don’t worry, there are no spoilers ahead so you can fully immerse yourself in the twists and turns that are to come!

Honourable Mention: From Russia with Love (1963)

This installation isn’t exactly the most impressive in terms of its cinematography but there’s no doubt it’s fun!

5. Skyfall (2012)

Don’t let its lengthy 2 and a half hour running time put you off - brilliant action sequences and outstanding visuals set this movie as one of the most impressive. The moody and dreary cinematography sets the scene for riveting climaxes.

Daniel Craig’s continued characterisation of 007 was evolutionary rather than revolutionary, and extends Bond’s reputation of intelligence and droll humour.

4. GoldenEye (1995)

The plot, albeit fun, seemed convoluted to begin with, but it’s plethora of exciting stunts and explosions makes it easy to forgive. Lots of astronomical talk in this one, but intelligent dialogue makes the story digestible. Pierce Brosnan has always been one of my favourite James Bond actors, mostly because of the nostalgia I feel with his era being the first I have watched.

3. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969)

Fan reception back in the day was not glowing as it was the first Bond film that followed Connery’s decision to step back from the role.
It’s electrifying climax is perfectly riveting to keep you on the edge of your seat, yet it’s accompanied by a love story that will undoubtedly melt your heart. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service perfectly balances action and romance.

2. Goldfinger (1964)

The movie that set the standard for future Bond movies to come. This was the first Bond installation that was packed with unexpectedly bizarre twists that we have come to know and love from the franchise.

Goldfinger is as Bond as a Bond movie can get - not to mention the killer theme that accompanied it.

1. Casino Royale (2006)

This is one movie that I would have no qualms about watching again and again, and it absolutely blew me away the first time I did. This was a cultural reset given the lukewarm receptions of the movies leading up to this, and it absolutely delivered what fans and critics had been yearning for. Craig’s portrayal of 007 brilliantly showcases the defining characteristic of the character - his glowering refusal to back down from the brutal, cold faćade. It’s no wonder that Casino Royale has been heralded as one of the best in the series - and I have no doubt that it’s my favourite.

Casino Royale isn’t just one of the best Bond movies, but a masterclass in how to make a timeless spy movie.
