[InC-Highlight] Movies To Watch this August!

Wow, July went past really fast and as promised, here are our movie highlights for the month of August!


There are 2 local films to look out for this month, with Chia Yee Wei's That Girl in Pinafore and Anthony Chen's award-winning film, Ilo Ilo. Also, the ever-endearing little blue Smurfs to brighten up our day in Smurfs 2!

That Girl In Pinafore - Now Showing


Directed by local filmmaker Chia Yee Wei, The Girl In Pinafore is a coming-of-age teenage love story, centered around xinyao music. One would naturally think of other films like “You Are The Apple of My Eye’ and ‘Glee’, but it’s essentially different in terms of story and development. Plus, many upcoming stars to look out for!

Synopsis
A coming of age teenage romance from Singapore set in 1993, about dreams, friendships, first love, and the difficult choice between following your head, or listening to your heart.



The story follows the teenagers' efforts to bring business back to a struggling folk music pub, and the blossoming love between Jiaming and May, both fans of Singaporean folk music.

The Smurfs 2 - Opens 7 August


Who can forget.. La la la la la la... Our favourite 3-apples-tall blue Smurfs are back and this time, it’s another adventure in Paris! The evil Gargamel isn’t going to give up on getting the Smurfs and creates his own ‘naughties’ which aren’t quite ‘Smurf-ed’ yet.

Also, Papa Smurf, Clumsy and Smurfette will be around Singapore so be sure to stay tuned to InCinemas as we will be releasing the schedule of where to spot these Smurfs!

Synopsis
In this sequel to the hybrid live action/animated family blockbuster comedy The Smurfs, the evil wizard Gargamel creates a couple of mischievous Smurf-like creatures called the Naughties that he hopes will let him harness the all-powerful, magical Smurf-essence.



But when he discovers that only a real Smurf can give him what he wants, and only a secret spell that Smurfette knows can turn the Naughties into real Smurfs, Gargamel kidnaps Smurfette and brings her to Paris, where he has been winning the adoration of millions as the world's greatest sorcerer.

Elysium - Opens 15 August


Elysium is an upcoming American science fiction action film written, co-produced and directed by Neill Blomkamp, starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster. You have the ever-handsome Damon showing off his chiseled abs, expect big explosions and fights too! Will our world really be like this in 2154? I hope not!



Synopsis
In the year 2154, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth.

The people of Earth are desperate to escape the planet's crime and poverty, and they critically need the state-of-the-art medical care available on Elysium – but some in Elysium will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve their citizens' luxurious lifestyle. The only man with the chance to bring equality to these worlds is Max (Matt Damon), an ordinary guy in desperate need to get to Elysium.

Jobs - Opens 15 August

We all know this man, or somehow heard of his genius invention. The brain behind the Apple empire, Steve Jobs revolutionized technology and the way we consume information.  The story of his life now made into a motion picture sees the hardship behind the Apple success.

The story of Steve Jobs' ascension from college dropout into one of the most revered creative entrepreneurs of the 20th century. The extraordinary story of Steve Jobs, the original innovator and ground-breaking entrepreneur who let nothing stand in the way of greatness. The film tells the epic and turbulent story of Jobs as he blazed a trail that changed technology -- and the world -- forever.

Tiny Times - Opens 15 August

Tiny Times is a romance drama film adapted, co-produced and directed by Jing M. Guo, based on the Chinese bestseller novel of the same name written also by Guo. A star-studded cast put on great performances, especially the four pretty ladies namely Yang Mi, Amber Kuo, Haden Kuo, Xie Yilin and the suave actors such as Kai Ko, Rhydian Vaughan and  Cheney Chen.

Synopsis
The story occurs in this speedy developing Shanghai city, and describes the lives of these four main female roles, Lix Xiao, Nan Xian, Gu Li and Tang Wan Ru. These four girls have been classmates since young and developed a very deep friendship even they all have various life-value and personal goal.



While facing a gigantic pressure in life, and love relationship, these four young ladies have encountered huge changes in friendship and love, even family relationship. Facing all these radical changes, how could they still hold on their attitude and value toward life and love? How could they still create colorful pages in their young life?

The After-Dinner Mysteries - Opens 22 August


Still can't forget the glitzy star-studded red carpet world premiere in Singapore last week? Stars Shô Sakurai, Keiko Kitagawa, Kippei Shiina and director Masato Hijikata were in Singapore to promote their latest film, The After-Dinner Mysteries!

Why Singapore you might ask, because part of the movie was filmed right here in our sunny island at iconic places such as the Marina Bay Sands and Merlion!

Synopsis

Reiko Hosho, the Hosho conglomerate heiress, and her butler, Kageyama, board the Singapore-bound The Princess Reiko, a luxury cruise ship owned by the Hoshos. It is Reiko’s first time in 18 years to embark this ship that is like a small town in itself, complete with restaurants, casino, spa, and movie theater.

Reiko looks forward to her long-deserved vacation, but an odd dead body is discovered onboard. Seven days until their arrival in Singapore. The murderer, hiding among 3,000 passengers and crewmembers, must be apprehended.


Ilo Ilo - Opens 29 August


Credits to the people behind Ilo Ilo and director Anthony Chen that put Singapore on the map, at the prestigious 2013 Cannes Film Festival. This is no doubt one of the most anticipated film Singaporeans are looking forward to, and is one worth the wait!



With so much expectations, does Chen feel the pressure to 'meet the standards'? Director Anthony Chen tells us more in our exclusive InC-terview! He also shared some of the difficulties filming the movie.

Synopsis
Set in Singapore, Ilo Ilo chronicles the relationship between the Lim family and their newly arrived maid, Teresa. Like many other Filipino woman, she has come to this city in search of a better life. Her presence in the family worsens their already strained relationship.



Jiale, the young and troublesome son, starts to form a unique bond with Teresa, who soon becomes an unspoken part of the family. But this is 1997 and the Asian Financial Crisis is beginning to be felt in the region...
