World Kung Fu Championship Smashes Into Singapore Arena!

Say hi to the new Kung Fu champion, 24 year-old Li Yan who clinched the coveted championship title in TVB8 International Chinese Kung Fu Championship 2013 (2013年TVB8全球中国功夫大赛).

Held at The Coliseum, Resorts World Sentosa last weekend, kung fu exerts from all over the world showcased their skills and pit against one another in front of esteemed judges, including TVB celebrities Kate Tsui and Ruco Chan!

Li Yan 李岩 impressed the panel of judges with his nifty reactions and the ability to capture the true essence of traditional Chinese martial arts. Three other winners, Matthew Ahmet from United Kingdom, Chan Wei Xiong 陈伟雄 from Australia and Yap Zheng Yan 葉政言 from Singapore, walked away with Best Fist Performance, Best Weapon Performance and Special Jury Award respectively.

Organised by Hong Kong’s leading broadcaster TVB, this inaugural championship will see eight countries participating in the final showdown in Singapore.

Nine contestants aged 17 to 49 were shortlisted for the Finals. These nine are from Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, United Kingdom and the U.S.A. Singapore will be represented by 17 year-old Yap Zheng Yan 葉政言who won the StarHub Kung Fu Supernova held last month.

The panel of judges is made up of three martial arts experts and two popular TVB artistes, Kate Tsui 徐子珊and Ruco Chan陈展鵬. The experts include Master Lau Ka Yung劉家勇师傅 who had previously starred in renowned Kung Fu films such as Drunken Master 2 醉拳2 and Drunken Master 3, Master Li Fai李暉师傅, a former World Wushu Champion, and Master Fan Shao Huang樊少皇師傅, a celebrated martial arts actor, best known for his roles as “Jin Shanzhao” “金山找” in Ip Man 叶问and Ip Man 2. 



Both Kate Tsui and Ruco Chan had memorable fighting scenes in their roles as a police officer in Sniper Standoff神槍狙擊 (to be released on StarHub On Demand 星和随选频道on 9 September, concurrent with Hong Kong’s telecast) and as a policeman in Brother’s Keeper巨輪respectively. Together, they will judge the contestants on stage presence, skills and the ability to capture the essence of Chinese martial arts.
