The Dream Makers Wins Big at Star Awards 20!

By InCinemas  /  28 Apr 2014 (Monday)

It was a near clean sweep of the four major acting awards for the hit drama series The Dream Makers at the Star Awards 20 Show 2 last evening!

The Dream Makers is a drama on the television industry, the glitz and glamour, highs and lows of the people working at the station. Besides bagging the ‘Best Drama Serial’ last night, the popular TV series had Chen Liping winning the Best Actress award, Guo Liang and Rebecca Lim winning the Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress respectively.

Chen beat her co-stars Rui En and Jeanette Aw, who were hot-favourites of the night, along with Lim and Chris Tong for their roles in ‘The Journey: A Voyage’ and ‘Sudden’ respectively.

At the interview backstage, Chen shared that it ‘wasn’t easy’ filming ‘The Dream Makers’ and felt her fellow nominees all stood an equal chance at clinching the coveted award.

“I’m really proud of myself. It wasn’t easy winning this award. When I was filming (The Dream Makers), it was rather difficult,” said Chen who was decked in a short white dress.

Lim, who was in the running for both the Best Actress Award and Best Supporting Actress Award went home with her first Star Awards acting trophy for her role as a sales manager. She got rather emotional backstage as she thanked her seniors for the encouragement and advice throughout her years in the industry.

“I’m really touched… I didn’t dare to expect too much as I was afraid I might end up being disappointed,” said Rebecca, who was also awarded the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes.

As to how she would be celebrating her win, the actress said: “My family members are gathered at my uncle’s house and I hope to share my award with them after this but I won’t be staying too long as I have a call-time at 6.30am tomorrow.”

The Best Actor went to Pierre Png for his portrayal as the unscrupulous Hei Long in ‘The Journey: A Voyage’. This also marks his first nomination for an Best Actor at Star Awards, beating fellow nominees Bryan Wong (Gonna Make It), Qi Yi Wu (The Dream Makers), Chen Han Wei (The Dream Makers) and Terence Cao (The Journey: A Vovage).

Another highlight of the show was the Top 10 Most Popular Male and Female Artistes where the awards were determined by fans via online and telephone calls. Fan favourites Jeanette Aw and Vivian Lai will be ‘graduating’ next year as both have clinched 10 years of the ‘Top 10’ awards, following the footsteps of the seniors like Bryan Wong and Chen Han Wei.

Both Wong and Chen were awarded the ‘All-time Favourite Artistes’, receiving the award from guest-of-honour Acting Minister of Manpower Mr Tan Chuan Jin.

Guest presenters of the night included other Asian entertainers such as Wu Chun, George Hu, Annie Chen and George Lam.

This paths the way for up-and-coming young actors, many who walked away with a trophy last night. First time nominees such as Xu Bin, Desmond Tan, Zhang Zhen Huan, Chris Tong and Ya Hui made it to the Top 10 list.
