It was a night of sizzle and dazzle - a total of 33 awards were presented at the annual StarHub TVB Awards; more than 20 Hong Kong TVB stars dazzled at the green carpet; and unforgettable performances by Hong Kong legends Adam Cheng and Liza Wang.

Cheng and Wang, two of Hong Kong’s most prolific television actors received the special commemorative SG50: Star of the Stars Awards, the highest honour in recognition of their abilities and years of experience in the TV industry throughout the past decades.

In addition, Wang was also crowned the My Favourite TVB Actress for her role as the career-minded singer in Limelight Years, beating out hot-favourites like Linda Chung, Tavia Yeung and Kristal Tin. During her acceptance speech, Wang congratulated TVB for its new generation of artistes, and shared that ‘determination and respecting your profession’ are important factors in the industry.

At a media interview backstage, Wang explained: “You have to pick a job that you are passionate about because you will work very hard to achieve something from it. You have to have that determination and the eagerness to improve… and I can see it in this batch of new artistes.”

Audiences were treated to a live sing-and-dance performance by Wang and Cheng, who sang themesongs from past TVB dramas, including The Bund and Chu Liuxiang. Both also bagged the My Favourite TVB Variety Show Host for their variety programme, Sunday Songbird.

Ruco Chan clinched the My Favourite TVB Actor for the second year running for his role in sci-fi drama Captain of Destiny, which was awarded the My Favourite TVB Drama.

Real-life couple Edwin Siu and Priscilla Wong took home the My Favourite TVB On-Screen Couple for their electrifying on-screen chemistry in Madam Cutie On Duty. Host Carol Cheng and her colleagues couldn’t help but teased the couple on stage, to which Siu gently pressed his cheeks against hers to pacify the cheering crowd. Siu then got the audience to sing a birthday song for Wong, who recently celebrated her 34th birthday on the 23rd of October.

“It is my first time in Singapore to attend this award ceremony, and I told myself that if I could receive an award, it will be the best birthday gift,” said Wong.

Vincent Wong and Rosina Lam were awarded the My Favourite TVB Supporting Actor and Actress respectively, while starlet Grace Chan bagged the Best New TVB Artiste.

To take on the leading role in TVB’s anniversary drama is pressurising, more so for a relatively newbie to attempt the challenge. When the drama was aired, Chan was slammed for her poor acting in the series, but Chan was able to take it in her stride and promised to improve.

“It’s my first time acting in such a heavy role, so when I was filming, I said I’ll try my best and that’s what I did… I will re-watch myself and find out where I did not do so well so that I am able to fix these problems,” said the 24-year-old actress.
