30 Dec 2016 (Friday)
2016 is ending on a sombre note with a number of unexpected deaths of movie stars. Let's leave that behind and focus on the future. 2017 has a plethora of great movies to look forward to. Here are 27 that caught our attention.
The
Age of Shadows
(5 Jan)
This exciting action thriller is chosen as the South Korean entry for the Best Foreign Language film in the Oscars. That should speak of the film’s quality. It also features Korean heartthrobs such as Gong Yoo and Han Ji-Min.
(Score a pair of premiere screening tickets to 'The Age of Shadows' here!)
Arrival
(12 Jan)
We have had a lot of sci-fi lately, but this one seems quite unique as it is more about communicating with the aliens. Also, Amy Adams receives a lot of praises (and award nominations) for her performance here.
Split
(19 Jan)
In this film, we will get to see James McAvoy play 24 different personalities. We're charmed by just one Professor X, and now we're given 24 different kinds of him? What in the world did we do to deserve this godly benefaction? It should be a fun ride, as it is written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Will there be a twist ending?
The Fortune Handbook
(26 Jan)
The Chinese New Year holiday is the best time for local films, and this local comedy unites the famous 'Lee's of Singapore - Christopher Lee, Li Nanxing, and Mark Lee! The trio stars in the same film for the first time, about the unexpected arrival of a Fortune God.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter
(2 Feb)
After 15 years, Milla Jovovich will finally retire as Alice. Say goodbye to her and to the highest grossing video game-based film franchise.
The LEGO Batman Movie
(9 Feb)
Do we really need yet another version of Batman? Well, this humorous take on the broody crusader might be exactly what we need to wash off the taste of the murderous Batman we saw this year.
Jackie
(16 Feb)
Watch this intriguing biographical drama of Jackie Kennedy after her husband’s infamous assassination. Natalie Portman’s portrayal has gained her various acting nominations.
Silence
(16 Feb)
The legendary director Martin Scorsese worked on this film for over 25 years. This critically acclaimed masterpiece feature Hollywood’s top stars including Andrew Garfield, Liam Neeson, and Adam Driver.
Hidden Figures
(23 Feb)
Girl power! This biographical comedy-drama is about three actual African-American women who helped NASA win the Space Race in the 60’s. It should be interesting to see how they succeed in a time when America discriminates against women and African-Americans.
Logan
(2 Mar)
Bid farewell to Wolverine in Hugh Jackman’s final film in the X-Men franchise. Judging from the look and feel of the trailer, this appears to be a very different X-Men film. That might be for the better.
Kong: Skull Island
(9 Mar)
What is often most interesting about monsters is their origin stories. Find out more about Kong’s in this film. Take note that it is a reboot which ignores Peter Jackson’s successful 2005 film. It stars Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, and Tom Hiddleston.
Beauty and the Beast
(16 Mar)
A musical live-action adaptation of (arguably) the best Disney animated film starring Emma Watson as Belle? Count me in!
Power Rangers
(23 Mar)
The nostalgia factor alone would make us queue up to watch it. It’s not the version we all know and love, but it might be nice to see a new spin to this familiar story.
Ghost In the Shell
(30 Mar)
Adapted from the internationally-acclaimed Japanese manga, it is unclear if this sci-fi mega blockbuster will soar at the box office. Sure, Scarlett Johansson is a fantastic actress in her own right, but with the whitewashing controversy surrounding it till today, the question remains if it is capable of capturing the authenticity of the Japanese fan-favourite anime.
The Fate of the Furious
(Fast & Furious 8)
(13 Apr)
There were a lot of hiccups leadings to Fast 7, especially after the passing of Paul Walker, and many were doubtful if Fast 8 was a go since his character felt like an appropriate finale to the series. Fast forward to months later, Dom, Hobbs and the rest of the crew are back for another heart-stopping instalment. This time, Dom go back on his loyal crew to assist the new villain, played by Charlize Theron.
Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy VOL. 2
(27 Apr)
Baby Groot is stealing our hearts! Fans of the misfit superheroes Star Lord, Gamora, Drax, Raccoon and Groot, having been waiting long enough for the next instalment. We can’t wait for the hilarious banter between the group, and undoubtedly the mixtape playlists!
Baywatch
(11 May)
Hot beach bods, bikini-clan ladies and a beach adventure? Consider us sold. Hollywood has been wanting to do a remake/reboot of the famed 90s television series that gave us the slow-mo run, but nothing seemed to be working out until this action-comedy reboot came about. Directed by Seth Gordon, the film stars Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach, Priyanka Chopra and Jon Bass.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
(25 May)
Despite the reported setbacks and delays due to Johnny Depp’s injury, the fifth instalment of the Pirates of the Caribbean film series set to return in the second half of 2017, with the core cast reprising their roles in this fantasy-adventure movie.
Wonder Woman
(1 Jun)
Is there any wonder why the first standalone Wonder Woman movie will be on our list? Gal Gadot kicked ass in the, unfortunately, underwhelming Batman v Superman. The DC universe continues its expansion with Justice League coming out in 2017 as well. The titular Amazonian demigoddess and warrior princess leaves home to stop a war and save the Earth.
Despicable Me 3
(15 Jun)
Who doesn’t love the gibberish-speaking mini yellow creatures? It’s either you love the minions or are annoyed by them. But in any case, brace yourself for more Baa-Baa-Baa in 2017!
Spiderman: Homecoming
(7 Jul)
There has been a couple of different Spider-Man movie reboots these few years, but this upcoming Spider-Man (Tom Holland) will the be first from Marvel Studios! We’ve seen a few adorable appearances of Holland swinging in his suit in Captain America: Civil War, and we’re pumped for a full 2-hour ride of another spidey adventure.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle
(5 Oct)
Manners maketh man After the successful box office result in ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’, secret agent Taron Egerton and his master Colin Firth are said to return to the sequel, with new A-list cast members joining the team such as Julianne Moore who will be the film’s villain; Halle Berry, Channing Tatum and even Elton John! Now, that’s a spy genre I want to see!
Thor: Ragnarok
(2 Nov)
‘Thor: The Dark World’
might have left a bad taste in your palate, but the inclusion of Hulk should shake things up. If anything,
this clip
shows us that we are in good hands of Taika Waititi.
Justice League
(16 Nov)
DC is putting a lot of faith in 2017 with their two major films ‘Wonder Woman’ and ‘Justice League’. The fact that we are getting a Justice League movie is pretty exciting, and right from the get-go when other standalone films felt like it was playing up to the hype of this movie, it has to be right.
Star Wars: Episode VIII
(14 Dec)
Disney has been very secretive about this film. We know very little about it except that Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) will play bigger roles alongside returning cast members Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega) and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac). Watch it for Carrie’s last performance.
Pitch Perfect 3
(21 Dec)
The Barden Bellas are not done with pitch-slapping and pitch-battling, for the musical comedy is back for its third season, with returning cast members Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow and Hailee Steinfeld, and rumours of Ruby Rose joining the a cappella franchise!
Jumanji
(21 Dec)
This ‘Jumanji’ reimagining is not a remake of the 1995 classic. It has a new plot where the kids are stuck in a video game and stars Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, and Nick Jonas.
