‘The King: Eternal Monarch’ Makes A Hot Debut Worldwide!

By Chen Shun  /  23 Apr 2020 (Thursday)

As most of you already know, ‘The King: Eternal Monarch’ made its debut earlier last week and it has premiered to a strong start. According to Nielsen Korea, the premiere of the series recorded the highest nation-wide average by percentage viewership and thus, setting a record on its broadcasting network, SBS, for the highest Friday-Saturday drama premiere rating.

The King: Eternal Monarch’ has a pretty interesting and fresh storyline but what made this drama an overnight sensation? I personally feel that the actors starring in the main roles are the ones that propelled this drama to the top. Let us take a look at who is starring in ‘The King: Eternal Monarch’ as the main leads together.

Lee Min Ho

From left to right: Boys Over Flowers, City Hunter, The Heirs

‘Nation’s Heartthrob’ and ‘Chemi-Shin (Chemistry God)’ were some of the nicknames Lee Min Ho gained over the years. Just a refresher, he was also the main lead in the mega-sensational drama Boys Over Flowers (2009) which propelled Lee Min Ho to stardom. After the big breakout, he continuously gained success with other dramas like City Hunter (2011) and The Heirs (2013).

Lee Min Ho in The King: Eternal Monarch

In ‘The King: Eternal Monarch’, Lee Min Ho portrays the character Lee Gon who is the Korean Emperor in a parallel universe. Lee Gon is said to be quiet, sensitive, compulsive and hates it when he is touched.

Kim Go Eun

From left to right: Goblin/Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, Cheese in the Trap

Kim Go Eun can be considered relatively new as an actress but she has already racked up some illustrious dramas under her belt. She is notably known for acting in Cheese in the Trap (2016) and Goblin/Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (2016-17)

Kim Go Eun in The King: Eternal Monarch

In ‘The King: Eternal Monarch’ Kim Go Eun will be portraying two characters. Before you start going WTF, let me explain to you. She will mainly be acting as Jung Tae Eul, a righteous detective that firmly believes that all criminals will eventually be caught one day. She will also be acting as Luna in the parallel universe that Lee Gon is from. The irony? Luna is a criminal that has committed all sorts of crime.

Synopsis: Story about a Korean emperor Lee Gon (Lee Min Ho) who tries to close the doors to a parallel world, which was opened by demons who were unleashed by a deity into the human world, and a detective Jung Tae Eul (Kim Go Eun) who tries to protect the people and the one she loves.

The King: Eternal Monarch’ is currently airing on Netflix.
