Winner of the 2021 ciNE65 Movie Makers Award: Siti, directed by Jun Chong

Livestreamed from The Grand Cathay on Wednesday, 28 July in the lead-up to National Day, this year’s ciNE65 Movie Makers Awards ceremony recognised and celebrated the efforts and artistic excellence of young filmmakers in Singapore.

A short film competition jointly run by So Drama! Entertainment and mm2 Entertainment, ciNE65 was launched in 2011 with the objectives to deepen Singaporeans’ sense of belonging to the nation and encourage youth filmmakers to share what Singapore means to them. This season’s theme, ‘Stronger, Together’, called on these talented artists to explore and reflect on how Singaporeans have braved adversity and how we can progress, united as one nation, one people, and one Singapore, in their works.

Presenting the awards for the night was Senior Minister of State Mr Zaqy Mohamad. In his opening address, Mr Zaqy commended all filmmakers for embodying the spirit of this year’s theme in their resilience and perseverance to produce and enter excellent films, despite the constraints brought on by safe management measures in the last year. It was all the more inspiring to see so many entries highlight and pay tribute to various groups such as migrant workers and the delivery personnel and their contributions to Singapore society.

The ciNE65 Movie Makers Awards jury comprised prominent directors and producers, among others, from Singapore, and around the region. Films were judged based on their relevance to the theme, ability to convey ideas, execution and treatment, originality, and emotive impact.

This year, Siti took home the coveted ciNE65 Movie Makers Award; director Jun Chong also won the exclusive opportunity to understudy a director of an mm2 Entertainment feature film. The gripping story of Joyce and her domestic helper, Siti, as they reminisce about Joyce’s grandmother through belongings left behind following her passing, was also awarded Best Film in the Open Category.
