2016 Movies Lookback (Part 2)

26 Dec 2016 (Monday)
As we approach the final days of 2016, it's time to look back at the films that soared high and flopped badly in theatres - in the good old fashioned InCinemas way...
(Don't miss the '2016 Movies Lookback Part 1' here!)
Die-Die-Must-Watch:
Train to Busan
The Korean zombie epic, Train to Busan took the world by storm earlier this year, grossing nearly $100 million worldwide. It became the highest-grossing Korean film in Malaysia, Hong Kong and Singapore, where rights of a Hollywood remake are in the works.
Most Anticipated Movie of the Year:
Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them
The fantasy-filled spinoff from one of Harry’s textbook became a movie blockbuster starring Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston and Colin Farrell, which easily became one of the biggest anticipated movies of the year, earning over US$718.9million in worldwide box office sales.
Best Spin-off Movie:
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
The one-off Star Wars spinoff, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is getting a lot of praise in almost every department - story, action, and the characters. The prequel to a time before Luke Skywalker came into the picture, fans can expect the same epic fanfare like the other Star Wars series, and an eye-popping unique story of triumph from a troupe of rebel fighters.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is now showing InCinemas!

Best R-Rated Movie:
The Handmaiden
Park Chan-Wook’s adaptation of Sarah Waters’ romantic novel Fingersmith. Told in three cleverly-planned sequences from the different viewpoints of the characters, Park thickens the plot with deception, lust and betrayals in the best way possible.
Most Disappointing Film of the Year:
Suicide Squad
The DC anti-heroes movie was such a highly anticipated movie as it was one of the first comics-to-film with supervillains fronting a feature film. The bizarre edits and stories that didn't make it to the final cut just didn’t play out right for fans and followers of the comics. As it turned out, being bad wasn’t good enough.
Ultimate Out-of-the-World Production:
Kubo And The Two Strings
It’s probably safe to say that the animators of Kubo and the Two Strings pulled off an elaborate feat to create a stop-motion feature film that wowed moviegoers with their detailed and ambitious work, presenting a whole new take on stop-motion animations of technological innovations.
Most Overrated Film:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows
Michelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo, and Raphael returned with a newcomer: the hockey-masked vigilante Casey Jones (Stephen Amell). Despite new and colourful villains Bebop and Rocksteady, the sequel to the 2014’s live action reboot is still a pile of incredibly empty-headed nonsense and juvenile turtles fighting amongst one another.
Most Underrated Film:
Eye In The Sky
Starring Helen Mirren and the late Alan Rickman, Gavin Hood's intense Eye in the Sky explores that question of the morality of the use of modern warfare - particularly on drones. Mirren leads the mission as colonel Katherine Powell, a tale that balances drama, emotion and tension in this heart-stopping picture.
Most WTH-Did-I-Spend-My-$$-On Movie:
Warcraft: The Beginning
Just stop recreating game adaptations already. If not for the miraculous business in China, Warcraft would have been a disaster for all parties. Despite orcs, elves and mages, Warcraft lacked the magic of a video game, and a story arc that will entice both fans and moviegoers.
Most Trashy Movie:
Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates
Put four of Hollywood’s younger improv actors - Zac Efron, Anna Kendrick, Adam DeVine and Aubrey Plaza, this vulgar comedy delivers the promised sexual gags, an adequate amount of male and female nudity, druggie slapstick jokes and heaps of over-the-top vocal obscenity.
Best Ensemble Cast:
Ghostbusters
The all-female reboot of the classic franchise may not have done exceptionally well at the box office, no thanks to the rife with online abuse and chatter about fans being unhappy about the reboot; but putting together four of Hollywood’s best improv comedians and a dorky secretary in this hilarious movie is one of the best gifts Hollywood has given us in pretty crappy 2016.
