Synopsis
Introducing the next film franchise from Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling … Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them is an extension of the wizarding world familiar to all Harry Potter fans and is based on a textbook Harry Potter reads while at Hogwarts.

This first film is set in New York during the 1920s and follows the adventures of Newt Scamander as he makes his way through a secret wizarding community in search of magical creatures. The franchise will have all the excitement, action and, of course, magic that has become the worldwide signature of the Harry Potter universe.

The wait was long but Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them can definitely satisfy all your hunger for the wizarding world! Not so much “Lumos” or “Expelliarmus”, this film introduces a number of magical creatures, and more importantly, the dark wizard of that time, Gellert Grindelwald.

The wait is finally over and it is now time to jump into a new era of magic in Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them! Set in the 1920s, this first instalment of the 5-film series follows Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) as he arrives in New York with his suitcase of magical creatures. All is well until he accidentally switched suitcases with a No-Maj (Americans’ way of addressing Muggles), Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler). Some of the magical creatures unfortunately have escaped, and it is their quest to recover them as these magical creatures have wandered into alien terrain and are surrounded by the most vicious creatures on the planet — humans.

The Good
With the focus on the fantastic beasts, this film expands the Potterworld further from the one we know all so well. Also, the setting in New York presents another perspective of the wizarding world, introducing new terms like No-Maj and MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America). In that era, they cannot risk exposing the wizarding community to the No-Majs, and MACUSA is the organisation to enforce such laws. Spells are casted and potions concocted to make the No-Majs forget their encounter with magic.

This film franchise illustrates the years way before the adventures of the boy who lived. One cannot help but look forward to how the next four films will play out, featuring Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp), the dark wizard second only to Voldemort. On this note, Johnny Depp made his cameo appearance towards the ending of the film, creating the twist that no one would probably expect.

Newt Scamander is the eccentric wizard who nurtures and protects magical creatures, ensuring their survival in magical and non-magical worlds alike. In the mysterious world he created in his suitcase, we see an abundant variety of fantastic beasts, living in patches of different realities with unskilful boundaries such as a curtain-like snowy landscape backdrop. See this world and the creatures, ranging from the humongous Erumpent to the little blue Billywig, in all its awe and glory with 3D effects!

The magical creatures featured in this film are also interesting on their own. The one most frequently appearing is the Niffler, a rodent-like creature. He loves all things shiny and simply cannot stop himself from leaving the suitcase to get more sparkly items for his collection. The Niffler also adds humour to the film as it scampers around to evade Newt, or pretends to be a statue (jewelleries in his hands though) to avoid being spotted. Other more notable creatures include the Occamy, a bird which can expand or shrink to fit the space of its surroundings, and the Bowtruckle, a plant-like tiny tree-dweller which is good at picking locks. Pickett is one such Bowtruckle who has attachment issues and Newt lets stay in his pocket.

The (Not That) Bad
When it comes to spells and wands swishing, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them sees relatively less of these compared to the Harry Potter series. It may take a while in the beginning of the film before we get to see some magic doing its wonders.

And The Summary
The wait was long but Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them can definitely satisfy all your hunger for the wizarding world! Not so much “Lumos” or “Expelliarmus”, this film introduces a number of magical creatures, and more importantly, the dark wizard of that time, Gellert Grindelwald.
