Watch the First ‘Silence’ Trailer that Took Martin Scorsese Over 20 Years to Make.

The much-anticipated trailer for Martin Scorsese’s Silence, a film about the Portuguese Jesuit missionaries in the 17th century, dropped yesterday. Starring Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver and Liam Neeson, this film is the longstanding passion project for director Martin Scorsese for nearly 30 years.

It created quite a buzz online with its release, with many calling it a strong Oscar-worthy picture. The trailer  is very ominous, where the overarching theme of violence and execution stays strong here. It is also a tough shoot for the actors, with reports from The New York Times Magazine that Driver lost roughly 50pounds for his role. He and Garfield also went on week-long silent retreats at St. Beuno's, a Jesuit house in Wales.

Set during the 17th century, the film follows two Jesuit priests, played by Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver, who embark on a journey into the Japanese jungle to find their mentor, played by Liam Neeson. From the trailer, it appears their efforts to find their mentor and spread the gospel of Christianity is met with violence and persecution.

While the film opens in December in the U.S, the release date in Singapore has been set on 16 Feb 2017!
